Dr Emily Macvean is the founder of Embody Psychology. A passionate Health Psychologist, Emily connects the intrinsic but often undervalued link between physical and psychological wellbeing.
Emily honours an individual's strength and trust with compassionate intervention programs. Individuals can then embody the life values they wish to live, especially when faced with ongoing challenges such as: chronic or terminal illness; pain, weight or stress management; anxiety including health phobias; depression; body image; alcohol and other substance use; other specialised adjustment conditions such as organ transplantation.
Working collaboratively at all times, Emily uses a flexible combination of evidenced-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness and Humanistic based therapy, Somatic Psychotherapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Graded Exposure Therapy for panic and phobia.
Emily co-majored in Psychology and Psychophysiology at Swinburne University, and after obtaining first class honours, she was awarded a full scholarship to complete a Doctorate of Psychology (Health) at Deakin University. Her doctoral qualitative research investigated Australian specialists' attitudes and practices of organ donation, which was recently published in a high impact, international SAGE scientific journal: Journal of Health Psychology.
Emily is a Fellow of the College of Health Psychologists and a member of the Australian Psychological Society. She maintains a commitment to excellence through researching best-practice techniques and her strong understanding of health psychology, clinical psychology, attachment, physiology, neurology, endocrinology, pharmacology and psychoneuroimmunology.
In addition to private clinical work, Emily has multidisciplinary team experience in pain management and chronic illness hospital units, rehabilitation units, community health settings and university lecturing. She offers appointments at the Western Health Collective in West Footscray and can be contacted below.
